Display Technology

In the early years, CMST was a display systems group. During the eighties, the group was active in TFT display research. The interconnection problems encountered when building demonstrator displays with hundreds of row and column electrodes have lead to the activities in interconnection and packaging technology, which are now a major activity of the group.

Display research has shifted over the years. The TFT active matrix activity shifted to microdisplay research during the nineties. Several generations of LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) microdisplays were designed and manufactured.

Since then, the display research at CMST has diversified, covering micromirror-based microdisplays (project Gemini), solid-state light sources for projection displays (project Odicis) and 3D image coding and projection (FWO project).

More recently, we have started using display technology for ‘smart lens’ applications. Lenses made of polymer materials with embedded liquid crystal cells can be used for a whole range of applications. Smart contact lenses can provide adaptive vision correction, for example to treat (age-induced) presbyopia. Using polymer microstructures, microlenses and liquid crystal cells, adaptive light steering components can be fabricated for applications in telecom, lighting, projection displays and metrology (project Secondos). This research incorporates the study of blue-phase liquid crystals and liquid-crystal/polymer interaction (FWO project Licofast).
